Deck Renovations & Waterproofing

Built to Last Through Every Whistler Season.

A deck in Whistler takes a beating. Snowloads, freeze-thaw cycles, and sustained moisture exposure put pressure on every assembly — from the waterproofing membrane beneath your pavers to the structural framing below.

At Avalanche Construction & Woodworks, we approach deck renovations the same way we approach everything we build: methodically, with the right materials and the right details, so your outdoor space holds up the way it should — year after year.

Deck Renovation in Whistler

More Than a New Surface — A Complete Weatherproof Assembly

Most deck problems in Whistler start below the surface. Failed waterproofing membranes, deteriorated flashings, and prolonged moisture exposure can silently compromise structural framing long before damage becomes visible. By the time a deck looks like it needs attention, the work underneath is often far more substantial.

We build and renovate decks as complete waterproofing assemblies — addressing the membrane, drainage, substrate, and structure before any finish material goes back down. Whether your project involves a paver deck over living space, exposed structural framing with rot damage, or a full outdoor living build, we work through every layer to make sure it's done right from the ground up.

From torch-on SBS waterproofing and heat trace installation to beam replacement and custom paver pad builds, we manage deck renovations from initial assessment through final inspection — coordinating all trades and municipal permits as required.

Project Spotlight

Taluswood Exterior & Deck Transformation

This Taluswood property came to us ready for a comprehensive transformation — not a repair, but a full reimagining of the deck and exterior from the membrane up. The goal was to bring every system up to standard while elevating the finish to match the calibre of the home and make the most of its panoramic mountain views.

Basalt cladding and bluestone pavers replaced the existing exterior surfaces — materials chosen for their durability in a mountain climate and their clean, natural weight against the surroundings. Radiant lines were installed beneath the deck surface to extend the usable season well into winter, enabling true year-round outdoor living and year-round barbecuing regardless of what Whistler's weather delivers.

The finishing details are what set this project apart. Frameless glass guard rails preserve unobstructed sightlines to the panoramic views the property is built around. Custom copper gutters and accents carry a warmth and craftsmanship through the perimeter details that is rarely seen at this scale. The full building and deck assembly was properly waterproofed throughout — every layer built to perform through Whistler's seasonal extremes, so everything above it can look and function exactly as intended.

Blueberry Full Deck Rebuild

This deteriorated deck had reached the end of its service life and required a complete structural rebuild from the ground up. The existing decking, framing, and support system were carefully demolished back to the foundation, giving us a clean base to build from and a clear picture of everything the new structure needed to address.

New structural lumber was milled and installed throughout — posts, beams, and joists secured to the home using custom-engineered joist hangers. Every component was selected and installed to create a framework built for decades of reliable performance, with the structural integrity and detailing to match the home's architecture.

New decking was installed across the rebuilt structure, with the hot tub area incorporating a Trex RainEscape drainage system beneath the deck boards. This concealed system captures water as it passes between the decking, channels it into integrated gutters, and directs it through hidden downspouts — keeping the space below dry and fully usable in all weather. To preserve the character of the home, the existing guardrails were carefully refinished and reinstalled, combining the look of the original craftsmanship with the strength and longevity of a completely rebuilt deck system.

White Gold Full Deck Restoration & Outdoor Living Build

This White Gold home came to us with two distinct deck challenges. The upper deck showed signs of failure at the waterproofing level — and once we opened it up, the extent of the damage was clear: substantial structural beams had been compromised by years of moisture-driven rot and required full replacement before any new assembly could go down.

We shored the structure, removed the failed framing, and replaced the affected beams before applying a new SBS torch-on waterproofing membrane to manufacturer specifications. The upper deck was rebuilt to perform correctly — watertight, structurally sound, and detailed to prevent the same conditions from recurring.

On the lower level, the project shifted to an outdoor living build. The grade was built up with compacted crush and landscaping to create a level, well-drained base, and a custom paver pad was installed as the foundation for a barrel sauna and hot tub area — a functional, finished outdoor space that works with the natural grade of the property.

Nordic Drive Deck Renovation

The existing vinyl deck had reached the end of its service life and was allowing water to penetrate the structure below. We removed the failing deck assembly, temporarily shored the structure, rebuilt the subfloor, and installed a new structural knife plate before replacing the soffits, fascia, and drip edge flashings.

The deck was then finished with a seamless Flexstone waterproof coating — a liquid-applied membrane that cures into a durable, flexible, slip-resistant surface with no seams to allow water intrusion. To complete the renovation, we reinstalled the structural wood post over the new knife plate, installed modern aluminum guardrails, and replaced the exterior door, delivering a refreshed deck designed for long-term performance.
